The four o'clock hour, and how I learned to stop dreading it

For most of my daughter's second year, four o'clock was the worst hour of the day. Everyone was tired, nothing was cooked, and I spent it apologising to the room. Then one afternoon I put the kettle on before the crying started, sat on the kitchen floor with a plate of cut pear, and let the hour be dull instead of fixing it.

We do that most days now. It is not a routine and it is not advice — just the small thing that made the hardest part of the afternoon survivable.

Simple Snacks for Small Hands: Twelve Ideas That Aren't Goldfish

I am not against crackers from a box — we keep a bag in the car like everyone else. But the four o'clock hour goes gentler when there is something already cut and waiting on a plate. These twelve take five minutes or less, and most of them are just fruit told in a different order.

Where to begin

The Letter

Come sit with me on Sunday mornings

I write one letter most weeks — what we cooked, what the children said, what I'm slowly learning to leave undone. It's the version of this place I'd send to a friend.

No noise, no selling. Leave whenever you like.
