This is the room I got wrong first. It faces north, which in Melbourne means grey light until noon, and the soft warm putty I chose read cold and slightly green for most of the day. The second colour — a chalky oat with a little pink in it — finally held its nerve at every hour, and now it is the calmest room in the house.
Three metres of bench, one deep drawer, and two children who want to be exactly where I am standing. What changed wasn't storage — it was deciding which twenty things live within reach and letting the rest be inconvenient.

I built it for the wrong reasons at first — a beautiful nook for a child who was never going to sit in it alone. It works now, and almost nothing about it is what I bought. Mostly it is a low shelf, a rug, and me sitting nearby saying nothing.
